For those of you living in the Northern hemisphere, those bright and hot days of summer are probably long behind you. The leaves have transformed into glorious shades of red and orange. That summer breeze has been replaced by a brisk gust, and it is time to start layering up again with the ever-present chill in the air. Well for those of you living in the Southern hemisphere, however, like myself, our weather is taking a different turn. Those dark days of winter are finally in the background. Sunshine and warmth are no longer a forgotten memory or created by heaters, and there is finally colour seeping back into nature that has been left bare and brown for a long time. Because I live in the Southern hemisphere and am finally getting a taste of spring, I thought I’d share with you a few reasons why spring is just the best season ever. Now if you aren’t currently experiencing spring, close your eyes and imagine that autumn and winter decided to take a break this year and you too get to enjoy the amazingness that is spring. It may not be a very advice-orientated blog, but all of the spring springing up around me is too beautiful to ignore so today, without further ado, I give you ten reasons why spring is the best season ever.

The sun is back
After the cold and gloomy winter where it is always dark or the sun just doesn’t seem to have the capability to warm anything, the warmth and light from spring sunshine are just the best. Not only is the sun now out and shining properly in all of its glory, but it actually seems to be doing something again. Spring means that you can stand outside in a patch of sunlight and actually feel yourself toasting up. Plus, the sunny weather always seems to perk up everyone’s mood. (Notice how everyone seems to be less happy when it is gloomy or rainy. The weather really does influence our moods!). So the sun is back, which is excellent, but so are people’s smiles.

You can shed your layers
If there is one thing that I hate about winter, it is that I can’t leave the house without looking like an Eskimo. Some people aren’t really affected by cold weather … and I am definitely not one of them. I feel the chill with every fibre of my being so winter means that I wear enough layers until I can’t feel the freezing temperature. I may look a bit ridiculous, and trust me people laugh, especially when you live in South Africa, but at least I am warm. The fantastic thing about spring means it is finally warm enough outside to shed some of those layers! No more thick jackets and thermals because there is enough warmth to survive outside without them. Not that I don’t love my fluffy socks and puffy jackets, but it doesn’t quite compare to just being able to walk out in a pair of shorts and a shirt. If being able to walk outside again in less than three layers isn’t proof enough that spring is the best, then I don’t know what will convince you.

Outside is green again
One thing that makes winter quite a miserable time, especially in a place that never snows, is that everything outside always looks so dead. Trees are bare, the grass is brown and covered in frost, and because of the chill and lack of foliage, there are almost no birds around. Spring brings an end to all that because it means the trees start to perk up with all of their new leaves coming in. The grass gets a minty fresh new look to it and little saplings and buds are popping up all over the place. Spring makes everything green again, inviting all of the fantastic, cheerful birds back and that just makes the outside environment so much more friendly and beautiful.

More hours in the day
Now the fact that there are fewer hours of light in winter isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it gives you a justifiable reason to stay wrapped up in your cosy bed. However, the short days of winter can be quite tiring. The sun is out so much later, and before the day has even really ended, the sun has given up, and it is dark again. Well, with spring, we get to enjoy more hours of the day. The sun starts to come up earlier again, and it doesn’t set in the middle of the afternoon, meaning there are so many more hours in the day to enjoy doing things. More hours of light in the day mean more time to do things, fewer hours of dark chill and more time to enjoy the beauty that comes with the extra hours. How great is that?

Adorable baby animals
If there is one thing that can sell me on absolutely anything, it is the thought of baby animals. I mean, if the thought or sight of a puppy, or kitten, or any baby animal doesn’t give you instant happy thoughts then I have a few questions. Well, spring is filled with baby animals, and adorable ones at that. Spring is usually the time when baby animals are born, but the internet is also just filled with ads or pictures that happen to star the most adorable baby animals you have ever seen. There is simply no escape from the adorable photos or videos of puppies, kittens, bunnies, piglets, ducklings and more. But quite frankly, who would even think of escaping from such cuteness? Spring is the best because of the baby animals. That is the only argument I need.

Flowers, colours, and colourful flowers
As I have mentioned, winter isn’t a particularly lively time because all of the greenery is either dead or muted. Spring rewards our patience for surviving the long and grim winter with dazzling flowers everywhere. Beautiful, colourful flowers in blossom pop up everywhere you look in spring. You can’t even escape them when you are indoors because as soon as spring has arrived, most stores take advantage of the blooming colours and so there are just spring flowers everywhere you look. In stores, in office vases and everywhere you look outside. Isn’t it just so beautiful? Who can resist the beauty and scent of fresh flowers everywhere? Not me, that’s for sure.

The freshness of rain
This may not be the same for everyone because rains come at different times depending on climate. But here in South Africa, the most amazing rains start in spring, and there is nothing that quite beats them. Whether they come as a drizzle or powerful thunderstorm, they bring a freshness to the air and life to everything. One of my favourite things to do in spring is sit by an open window, our outside and just absorb everything that comes with the rain. Sure it might get a bit chilly, and I often get wet because I can’t help but stand in the downpour, but I’m sure a lot of you will agree that there is something about the freshness of rain that is absolutely unbeatable.

You can do things outside
Because the temperature is more humane and there are more hours of daylight, spring means that we can actually start doing things outside again. Not just regular outside activities such as gardening or swimming, but the welcoming weather means workouts can shift from the gym and into the open air. Who hasn’t used the frostiness of winter to avoid going to the gym? Well, the temperate weather will persuade us to get up and out, even if we don’t want to. It also means that instead of sitting hunched at your desk working because it is close to the heater, you can go work outside with a cool breeze and the warmth of the sun. I don’t mind spending time indoors, but I do also get a little bit of cabin fever in winter when it just isn’t nice to do things outside. Spring is the best because it gives you a whole new environment to start doing things in again, an environment that comes with fresh air and sunshine and more pleasant ambient noises than the whirring of a heater.

Spring cleaning
Spring is the time when everything seems to be waking up. Things look so much fresher, there is new life everywhere, and as such, this might awaken your urge to do some cleaning of your own. Motivation to do a proper clean of your room/apartment/house will never quite be as high as in the spring where everything just seems so cheerful, inviting and encouraging so take advantage of it. In fact, the spring weather may just inspire you to make cleaning less of a priority and more of a pleasure because your space will look just as fresh, new and beautiful as the world outside. You certainly won’t regret the spring cleaning, but there is also nothing quite as satisfying as rewarding yourself (especially at this time of year) with something relaxing after all of that hard work.

My birthday … and more
This is more personal, but my last reason why spring is just the best is that it means that my birthday is coming up. My birthday is mid-October, which is definitely spring in the southern hemisphere so I know that once the winter chill is finally gone, and everything is in bloom again, I can really start the count down to and get excited for my birthday. However, there are more festivities in springtime besides my birthday. For the Northern folk, spring means that Easter is coming, which means everyone gets to resupply their chocolate stashes. For us in the South, Spring means looking forward to Halloween and all of the sweet specials and even Christmas if you are like me and start getting excited for Christmas before the end of October. All in all, there are a lot of reasons to be excited in spring.

And so there you have it. I hope that you all enjoyed today’s blog post. If you are enjoying the arrival of spring, I hope that this blog post made you appreciate it and got you excited to do something and take advantage of the weather. If you aren’t enjoying spring right now though, I hope this blog gave you something to look forward to once the cold is gone. For my question of the day:
