What to do on Halloween?

When you’re little, it seems simple what you would do on Halloween. You get dressed up in your cool costume, maybe help decorate the house in spooky attire and then go trick-or-treating in your neighbourhood. Or you and your friends have a sleepover at each other’s house, and there is just Halloween candy everywhere. However, the fun sometimes goes out of it the older you get, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get to enjoy Halloween. There are plenty of things to do during this spooky holiday, whether you are young or old or doing things solo, with a partner or with a group. I was thinking of a fun way to spend Halloween with my boyfriend and maybe a friend or two. While I was researching, I actually realised there are many things to do on Halloween, even for people like me who aren’t into things that are in anyway creepy or scary. So, if you’re struggling to think of something to do this Halloween, or are looking for inspiration to spice up your group gathering, here are ten ideas for what to do on Halloween. I hope you enjoy it! 

Go trick-or-treating … or something 

Who is to say that trick-or-treating is only for kids? I say that it is a little unfair. How come the toddlers and tweens get free passage to get all dressed up and receive free sweets? Well, you can still go trick-or-treating if you really want to, even if you just arrange it with a few friends and do a small loop. Or, if you feel you are too old for trick-or-treating, why not try an alternative? How about a candy potluck? You could do it with friends, or at your workplace, and have everyone bring their favourite candies. You could even make it exciting and assign each person a letter, country or idea and their sweet treat has to match. There are so many possibilities, so don’t miss out on all the sugar available. 

Carve Pumpkins

I have always wanted to do this because what could be more fun than carving faces into a pumpkin? Pumpkin carving could be a peaceful, artistic solo act, or a fun date idea for you and your partner. Or, if you are more social, host a pumpkin carving evening with your friends. You could even take your artistic pumpkin project to the next level by hosting a contest or turning your evening into a little competition. There are so many fun ways to do pumpkin carving and so many artistic looks you can add. Who says vegetable art can’t be fun right? 

Halloween Movie Marathon 

In my opinion, there is nothing better than settling down wrapped up in a fluffy blanket, a reasonable amount of snacks and drinks nearby, and turning off the lights to a movie marathon. Plus, there are so many Halloween movies out there that you can’t not have a Halloween movie marathon. The great thing is that there are enough Halloween movies out there so that everyone can find their movies – because me watching horror movies is not going to end well and I’m sure there are others who love nothing more than a good jump-scare where you felt your heart stop for a beat or two. So, if you are stumped for things to do and aren’t particularly thrilled to head out into the world, why not stock up on popcorn, get comfy and watch some Halloween movies? 

Something haunted? 

What says Halloween more than something haunted? So, if you like haunted houses or aren’t freaked out by the idea of one, why not see if there is one you can visit? Lots of amusement parks have haunted houses, so you could even spend a day at the amusement park and have some fun on the other rides? Or, if there aren’t any haunted houses around, I’m sure there are other haunted activities. You could do a haunted hayride, maybe there is a haunted maze somewhere, the choice is yours. All I can say though is be ready to feel that adrenaline rush. 

Local spooky event

On the topic of haunted houses and such, you could always branch out into more general Halloween events happening in the community. Maybe there is a night-time event happening at the zoo, or a drive-in movie night. Sometimes, given their growing popularity, there is a Dia De Los Muertos event, and those are lots of fun to go to. A lot of places hold Halloween runs/walks where you can come in your costume and either run or walk through a spooky place. There are usually actors playing horrific characters and plenty of decor destined to put your nerves on edge, plus it is also a fun opportunity to dress up, do exercise and have fun with friends on Halloween. 

Binge-eat 

If you’re really stuck on things to do, then why not resort to the simplest of all pleasures – food. During Halloween, or any ‘holiday season’ really, there is an excess of themed food. Take advantage of it. Stock up on your favourite sweets, or any other Halloween-themed foods that you love and have a party for one (or more, if your friends like it too). I usually wouldn’t encourage this sort of thing, but I also think that sometimes, we deserve to treat ourselves, so why not at a time when there is plenty of deliciousness to go around? All you need for this one is to have an empty stomach.

Throw a party 

I love throwing parties, and Halloween is as good a time as any because you can skip worrying about a theme and where to get decor. If you’re like me and love hosting events, why not throw a party? You can invite friends, family and have a spooky evening. You could even go all out and make Halloween themed food and drinks, and everyone, of course, has to come in some type of Halloween costume. What’s not to love?

Pumpkin spice scavenger hunt 

If any of you read my last blog post, and I highly suggest you do so if you haven’t then take a pause and go read that, then come finish this one, then you’ll know that I love pumpkin. That means that Halloween is the best time ever for someone like me because everything everywhere is pumpkin flavoured or pumpkin spice. So, that being the case, how does a pumpkin spice scavenger hunt sound? Either on your own, with a partner or with friends, try and find as many items with pumpkin spice in them and if they sound good, you might as well support the hunt and eat/drink it. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some pumpkin spice hunting to do. 

Have a magical movie marathon 

Who says you can only watch Halloween movies on Halloween? Sometimes there just aren’t any good Halloween movies available or, like me, there are very few that you can even stomach. But that shouldn’t stop us from having a mystical movie night. So, have a magical movie marathon instead. Crack out all eight of those Harry Potter films (or other magical/mystical films you enjoy) and get comfortable. It’s a movie marathon that is eerie instead of scary, perfect for softies like me.

Play mysterious board games 

My inner-child will say that this is the best option on the list, especially if you are a fan of games. It’s the perfect activity if you don’t want to throw a big party, or go out, and there are so many fun versions of things like ‘Cluedo’, ‘Who Dun’it’ and murder mysteries that you might end up playing for a lot longer than you think. For those who love games, or are just competitive children at heart, then this is the Halloween activity for you.
