Valentine’s Day Movie Night List

As soon as we flip the calendar page from January to February, one significant day of the new month comes to mind. Valentine’s day! The moment we shift into Feb, much like the seemingly overnight decorating for Christmas in November, everything is all red, pink hearts and candy. By the way, why are sweets and chocolate such a significant aspect of all holidays? Well, seeing as it is now officially February and I have yet to enter a store where I can escape hints of this lovey-dovey holiday, I thought why not embrace it? Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sucker for anything that falls into the romance genre, and this run-up to Valentine’s day is the best time to welcome said romance genre into our lives. That being said, what better way to get ready for love than by watching romance/rom-com movies? For all you opposed to these sappy, corny love stories, too bad! Love is in the air, Valentine’s Day is approaching which means that for now, if this isn’t your favourite holiday of the year, you may just have to suck it up and try to dull your anti-valentine’s day urges with vast amounts of chocolate (which is in bountiful supply at the moment). Now that that is done, here are ten romance films to get you ready and in the loving mood for Valentines Day!

Valentine’s Day

What better movie to watch on Valentine’s day than a movie named after this love-obsessed holiday? This is a great, fun-loving movie to watch that follows a series of individuals (whose lives all intersect in some way, shape or form) as they experience Valentine’s day. The cast is phenomenal, and there is the perfect mix of romance, comedy and drama to make it quite an exciting story to follow. It’s an ideal movie to watch with your loved one, with friends or even by yourself with your blanket and some ice cream and I assure you that in spite of its sentimental title, it is a very entertaining watch.

The Notebook

A list of romance movies wouldn’t be complete without this oh-so-famous Nicholas Sparks classic tale. It is a film adored by women all over the world, and not for no reason. Ryan Gosling is easy on the eyes and plays a charming character, and Allie is such a warm and likeable character that you can’t help but root for them. It is an incredibly popular, award-winning film that indeed shows that true love can withstand any given obstacles. It may be cheesier than fondue, but you won’t find a movie more heart-warming or genuine.

50 first dates

This is probably one of the most adorable movies I’ve ever watched. I’m not sure if it’s Drew Barrymore’s quirky, innocent portrayal of her character, Adam Sandler’s incredibly humorous attempts to woo Drew’s character or the adorable walrus who features a few times. In fact, I think it is next to impossible to find a more likeable couple than these two stars in this film. Who wouldn’t love a movie where a playboy becomes a devoted boyfriend because he meets an amazing girl? The only problem is that the girl he has fallen for has no short-term memory, so every day is a completely clean slate for her. This movie is both a bundle of laughs but also a great sappy romance, as only Sandler can pull off. And, seeing as my cynical boyfriend enjoys this movie, I can safely say it is a chick flick that anyone can enjoy.

All things Valentine

Much like a list of romance movies isn’t complete without a Nicholas Sparks’ story, it also isn’t complete without at least one Hallmark film making the cut. Okay, I know that Hallmark movies take cheesy romances to a whole new level, but if you’re looking for some light fluff that promises a happy ending, a Hallmark film like this one is the perfect one to snuggle up and enjoy with some tea, pizza and chocolate. This romantic movie is all about a writer who was snubbed on Valentine’s day, however, after meeting someone with similar feelings towards the holiday, they both start to warm towards it, and each other. It is the perfect film to watch if you want something light and leaves you feeling warm and gooey inside.

Dirty Dancing

This is probably one of my favourite films of all time. The music, the dancing, the love story between two people so different you would never expect them to work … ooh, it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it! Dirty Dancing may be a bit of a dated film (but who are we kidding some of the best movies ever could be considered ‘dated), but it is such a compelling, romantic story that you’ll forgive it for being a little bit older than, say, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’. The story follows a young girl who falls in love with the dance instructor while holidaying with her family at a tranquil resort. Her father, however, disapproves of the relationship, which causes problems for the loving couple. The plot is well-thought-out, it is romantic and charming, and the dancing is so beautiful and sexy you should watch the movie for that! No doubt about it, if you watch Dirty Dancing, you will “have the time of your life” (those who have seen the movie will get that reference. Otherwise, you’ll have to watch it to understand what I meant!)

Titanic

You kind of go into the film with a bit of a spoiler because we all know from history that the Titanic sank, thus we know how the film will end, but it is a tear-jerking romance that is a phenomenal movie to watch nonetheless. Basically, if you haven’t seen the movie, you must, or re-watch it because hey, it’s Valentine’s day! This film is a classic romantic-disaster story that won eleven Oscars, thanks to the wonderful cast, plot and score. It’s a romance that gives you chills but please remember to bring tissues. And ice cream. And chocolate. You’re going to need them.

The Princess Bride

My parents were the ones who introduced me to this movie, and while I thought it might be dull and slow, I was so pleased to realise how wrong I was. Usually, when one thinks of a romance, they think of a traditional boy meets girl, they fall in love, face some obstacle but then end up together, right? Well, this movie is nothing like that. It is a fantasy story, elegantly mixing with action sequences, drama, some light comedy and, of course, a romance that isn’t cheesy at all. This movie truly gives one an idea of what people will do for true love, and how poetic a love story can really be, so do yourself a favour and watch this movie!

The Tourist

Okay, I hear you. Not a movie you might expect to be on a list of romance movies that are meant to be getting us into the mood for Valentine’s Day. However, I had a think about it and thought to include one non-traditional movie for those who are not so fond of the genre and would prefer a bit more on the comedy, action or exciting side. Not only is the main cast gorgeous, but the movie features location shots in Paris and Venice, both of which happen to be equally beautiful and romantic cities. The film is filled with thrills that can quench your intellectual needs, some nail-biting action scenes and undeniable chemistry between the two leads. This is definitely a good choice if cheesy romance isn’t really your thing.

Isn’t it romantic

This new film starring Rebel Wilson definitely has enough aspects to fit right in with the upcoming holiday. In her typical style, Wilson brings comedy and sarcasm to a whole new level in this satirical film where she falls into her worst nightmare. Always having been a cynic regarding love, she is knocked unconscious and is all of a sudden playing the leading role in a real-life romantic comedy. PG-13. The concept of the film is brilliant, critiquing all the tropes that are well known and loved in the romance genre and using them to create an amusing story that has flipped the traditional love-story right on its head. This is a good choice if you want a good laugh, and if you are, like Natalie in the film, also cynical of love, romance and Valentine’s day as a whole.

Crazy Rich Asians

Last but not least, I thought we should finish up on a modern note that was both good fun, and an adorable and satisfying love story. We are all familiar of the love story where someone falls in love with another who is far above their stature (either a commoner with royalty or an ordinary individual with an heir/heiress), and this version brings a fresh take to this conventional plot. There is a considerable amount of comic relief, riches beyond belief and an excellent tour of Singapore and its subsequent culture, on top of the romance part. All in all, it’s a great movie to watch and is perfect for any occasion.
