WHAT IS SELF CARE?

In health care, self-care is any necessary human regulatory function which is under individual control, deliberate and self-initiated.

– Wikipedia

Self-care can be anything that helps you to feel better and is initiated by you. It could be watching tv, taking a long bath, going for a run, turning around a positive day or removing yourself from toxic situations. It’s so varied, so my version of self-care and what could help me could be different to what you would choose to do, to help you.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Sleep is the number one most important thing we can do for our body and mind. We need sleep to be able to heal, relax and turn out brain off. Without this, our minds go into overdrive and it can actually be quite detrimental to our health if we don’t get enough. Naps are also great, and can help you get that daily boost of energy.

SAY NO TO OTHERS

To me self-care is protecting your mental health and only doing the things you feel comfortable doing. Saying no to someone is okay if it means you will be more comfortable. Always consider your mental health in any situation you are in. Ask yourself, will this have a negative impact on me mentally? If the answer is yes, then maybe reconsider your choice. Of course, this can vary depending on the circumstance but it’s important for you to put yourself first.

DRINK WATER

Something so small as drinking water I see as self-care. It’s so easy to forget to drink fluids throughout the day, I know I struggle with this myself. Set yourself a small task of drinking a certain amount each day. There’s so many water bottles out there now that even have the times you should be drinking and the amounts too, which are really helpful in keeping you on track.

Staying hydrated can help you so much, first of all for overall health, but for me I feel so much better when I have drunk water and got the right amount that day. It has great benefits for your skin too!

FILL YOUR MIND WITH POSITIVE THINGS

Unfollow those people online who make you feel inferior, turn off the news and surround yourself with positive, like-minded people. Those simple things can make a difference in how you think about yourself. I recently wrote a post about how who I followed on social media was starting to have such an impact on how I saw myself. Fill your mind with positive, uplifting things and watch how it changes your perspective of life.

DO SOMETHING YOU ENJOY

Life is to be enjoyed, take some time away and do whatever it is that makes you happy. Self-care to me is doing the things you love and that make you feel good. We all of course have different things that make us happy, but you should go do that thing that makes you your happiest self.

Thanks so much for reading! I have really enjoyed working with Tia on this subject and hope you learn something about it today. Please go check out my blog where Tia talks about self-confidence and gives some tips on how you can improve it. You can check it out here.

  1. I like these tips especially as it highlights that self-care doesn’t have to be specific activities you set aside time for. Saying no to others is not talked about as a self-care thing, but is actually so important!

  2. Love this post so much, it’s so lovely to read about self care as it’s something that I personally love but find myself neglecting it sometimes 💖 It is definitely different for everyone, for some people self care is keeping themselves busy because that can keep them happy and for others it’s doing something that involves less thinking 🙂
